August 31, 2010 By: lilybird Category: Software

Any person who works with a computer that has an Internet connection has to always practice caution when downloading softare onto their computer or when simply surfing the web because of the constant threat of viruses and worms. Such programs can causelead your PC to become unstable and worse yet, after it has spread within your system such viruses can even affect other computers connected to yours.

Due to this fact, anyone who uses their computer regularly should have a top anti-virus software installed on their computer for protection against attacks from viruses and worms that roam the Internet. The good thing about malicious programs is the fact that it is easier to spot them trying to get into your system. For instance, a virus or worm can try entering your system through a suspicious attachment usually from an unknown source. By now, most Internet users are smart enough to not open suspicious attachments. Also, there are good anti-virus software which can scan attachments prior to you opening them so that your computer doesn’t get infected with a virus to begin with.

However, there also other viruses that one has to worry about such as adware and spyware. Unfortunately, a lot of the lesser anti-virus software do not protect you from such threats. Once adware and spyware get into your computer, they can be very dangerous to you. While adware is used for advertising and is usually nothing more than a very big annoyance, spyware keeps track of everything you do on your PC and reports information such as credit and social security card numbers to its creator. The worst part is that such software are very hard to detect with the naked eye, which means that without proper protection, you will not realize that your privacy and security are being breached until it is too late. This is why it is also important to have a good adware and spyware removal program, these applications can help you protect your PC by getting rid of infections already on your computer, and proactively scanning the internet while you surf to make sure your PC doesn’t get infected.

Creators of viruses and other malicious programs make sure that it is extremely difficult to remove their programs, so the easiest way to protect your computer from such threats is Check that you always scan attachments before opening them and that you only go to websites you trust. Having adware and spyware removal software on your computer will help you with this since these types of software can not only remove adware and spyware from your system but can also protect you from future infections by proactively scanning the web.

Do I Actually Require A Windows Registry Tool?

August 31, 2010 By: lilybird Category: Software

Over time you would have noticed PC problems starting to appear on your PC. This is a normal occurance with a PC and the more you use it, the slower the speed and performance will become leading to more problems. It is a vicious circle and the general point of reference to these common computer problems is the Windows registry.

Computer problems such as startup issues, performance problems, freezing screen, blue screen or those annoying error messages can all be caused by the registry so lets explain what the Windows registry does.

It is a huge database at the heart of your computer’s system that stores all of the hardware and software configuration settings, the user settings and the system’s security and policy settings. Everytime an application is launched by the user, the Windows registry is conferred to in order to initiate the task. Without the registry your PC would not function. Over time the registry grows due to the amount of operations that are asked of it and because of this errors begin to occur within it. Unwanted and invalid entries get left within the system registry causing dead readings, and these are the issues that cause your common computer problems to occur.

For example, deleting a program instead of uninstalling it leaves many traces of the program within the Windows registry. This is a prime case of leaving invalid entries within the registry.

To fix Windows registry errors you can choose to download a top registry cleaner from the net. This is by far the easiest and safest manner in which to fix your registry. Windows registry cleaners scan your computer system registry for the unwanted and obsolete entries. With a few clicks of your mouse you can resolve the issues within the registry very simply, which in turn gives way to a more optimized and higher performing PC.

A decent windows registry repair tool will backup your existing registry before it starts to repair it. In case anything should malfunction during the cleaning process then the backup copy can be re-instated without causing any major problems with your system. This of course is an absolute necessity and without a backup file you may never be able to recover your data.

The registry repair tool will also defragment your registry. This puts the entries within your database in the most readable and obtainable order. Consider putting dozens of files into a filing cabinet without some sort of structure and then days later trying to find where you put them. It would take a long time. Categorizing your files gives you an easy filing system, much the same as defragmanting your registry.

There are many Windows registry repair tools to fix your registry problems and unless you are a very competent computer engineer then I do not advise you to try and manually repair the registry yourself. A reputable registry cleaner is the safest and most reliable way to restore your computer’s performance.

IPhone 4 – How Good Is It?

August 28, 2010 By: lilybird Category: iPhone/iPod

A few short years ago, Apple sat on top of the smartphone world relatively unchallenged. As time has passed, other manufacturers have pumped money into their own development programs and closed the gap considerably between Apple’s flagship iPhone and their own handsets. In an attempt to stand head and shoulders above the competition once more, Apple has unleashed the iPhone 4.

One of the changes found in the iPhone 4 is on the inside of the phone. The iPhone 4’s predecessor, the 3GS contained a Samsung-based Cortex CPU. This has been replaced by Apple’s own A4 chip, the same one used by the iPad. The iPhone 4 does not quite speed along at the same rate as the 1GHz available to the iPad, but it is still more than fast enough. It brings up graphics quickly and navigates seamlessly. Those who find it too slow are likely looking for something to complain about.

Those quickly-rendered graphics are displayed on a 3.5 inch screen with 960 x 640 pixel resolution. Combine that with a mind-numbing 326 ppi pixel density and you have a display that is absolutely second to none. The incredible resolution makes up for any shortcomings in size, and it has even earned the name of Retina Display. It is so named due to the claim that it presents graphics in more detail than the human eye is able to distinguish. It may seem like overkill to present clarity that the user can’t see anyway, but at least consumers need not worry about a less than stellar display. In fact, many testes of the iPhone 4 have stated that the Retina Display easily provides the sharpest images they’ve yet seen.

With a display so sharp, one would hope that Apple has improved on the rather weak 3 megapixel camera found on older models. They have, as the iPhone 4 features a 5 megapixel camera with a backside-illuminated sensor that is more light-sensitive. The LED flash is one of the smaller sizes and can blow out some photos, but the iPhone takes terrific photos in low light and without a flash.

Finally, Apple has decided that it is time to produce a phone that allows multitasking. Though not backgrounding in the strictest sense of the word, the iPhone lets some APIs that imitate backgrounding to run simultaneously. Critics will cry foul, but for regular, everyday users, it is just fine. Until now, Apple has stated that their smartphones would suffer battery drain by performing multitasking. The iPhone 4 has cleared up any potential issue here, as it has been known to produce almost 40 hours of normal use in some tests.

Apple has once again set the bar in smartphone technology with the iPhone 4. With its unmatched Retina Display and high performance, the iPhone has placed Apple first in many consumers’ minds. Customers will be more than pleased with what the iPhone 4 has to offer.

You can find quite a lot of Samsung Captivate accessories such as screen protectors, protective cases and headsets can help you make the most of your purchase. Perhaps the most striking feature of the Samsung Captivate that seems to catch the eye of would-be consumers is the brilliant 4 inch display. While it does not have the most pixels of any smart phone on the market, it does offer several energy saving features, which enable you to use your Captivate for longer while owners of other smart phones constantly search for car adapters and power outlets.

To protect the beautiful screen from being scratched, you can invest in one of the numerous Samsung Captivate screen protectors that are sold by online vendor or in electronics and department stores. When you buy a smart phone, you want it to work for you, and not the other way around. It isn’t much fun to have a brand new phone get scratched or dented because you carelessly threw it in your pocket forgetting that your keys were in there too, or dropped it while rushing out from work for a lunch break. A small moment like this can leave a dent that can last forever. That’s why you should also consider one of the many Samsung Captivate protective cases, which are designed to maximize the protection of your phone without reducing your abilities to use all of the features of the phone. And when you have a Captivate, you won’t be able to help using it and taking it everywhere with you. It’s one of the lightest smart phones on the market, weighing a paltry four and a half ounces and measuring not much more than a third of an inch in thickness.

Besides the four inch display, which offers multi-touch and virtual keyboarding capabilities, one of the other stellar features of the newly released Samsung Captivate is the five megapixel camera it comes with. Not only can you take pictures that look good enough to show all of your friends, you can become an amateur film maker with included video capabilities. Picture yourself capturing your child’s first steps with a high definition camera. A few years ago, that would have cost thousands of dollars in equipment, and you would have had no guarantees of being able to get the camera out of the box and onto the tripod in time. With the Samsung Captivate’s camera, it’s now possible. Never miss a moment.

Understanding Embedded Systems

August 26, 2010 By: lilybird Category: Hardware

Whenever the word microprocessor is referred, it conjures up a picture of a desktop or laptop PC running an application such as a word processor or a spreadsheet. While this is a common application for microprocessors, it is not the only one and the fact is most people use them indirectly in common objects and consumer electronics without realising it. Without the microprocessor, these products would not be as sophisticated or cheap as they are today. The embedding of microprocessors into equipment and consumer appliances started before the appearance of the personal computer and consumes the majority of microprocessors that are made today. In this way, embedded microprocessors are more deeply ingrained into everyday life than any other electronic circuit that is made. A large car may have over 50 microprocessors controlling functions such as the engine through engine management systems, brakes with electronic anti-lock brakes, transmission with traction control and electronically controlled gearboxes, safety with airbag systems, electric windows, air-conditioning and so on. With a well-equipped car, nearly every aspect has some form of electronic control associated with it and thus a need for a microprocessor within an embedded system.

A washing machine may have a risc microcontroller that contains the different washing programs, provides the power control for the various motors and pumps and even controls the display that tells you how the wash cycles are proceeding. Mobile phones contain more processing power than a desktop processor of a few years ago. Many gadgets contain microprocessors and there are even kitchen appliances such as bread machines that use microprocessor-based control systems. The word control is very apt for embedded systems because in virtually every embedded system application, the goal is to control an aspect of a physical system such as temperature, motion, and so on using a variety of inputs. With the recent advent of the digital age replacing many of the analogue technologies in the consumer world, the dominance of the embedded system is ever greater. Each digital consumer device such as a digital camera, DVD or MP3 player all depend on an embedded system to realise the system. As a result, the skills behind embedded systems design are as diverse as the systems that have been built although they share a common heritage.

There are many definitions for this but the best way to define it is to describe it in terms of what it is not and with examples of how it is used.

An embedded system is a microprocessor-based system that is built to control a function or range of functions and is not designed to be programmed by the end user in the same way that a PC is. Yes, a user can make choices concerning functionality but cannot change the functionality of the system by adding/replacing software. With a PC, this is exactly what a user can do: one minute the PC is a word processor and the next it’s a games machine simply by changing the software. An embedded system is designed to perform one particular task albeit with choices and different options. The last point is crucial because it differentiates itself from the world of the PC where the end user does reprogram it whenever a different software package is bought and run. However, PCs have provided an easily accessible source of hardware and software for embedded systems and it should be no surprise that they form the basis of many embedded systems. To reflect this, there are many advanced microcontroller projects to build a simple hobby gadget or a sophisticated data logging system for a race car.

If this need to control the physical world is so great, what is so special about embedded systems that has led to the widespread use of microprocessors? There are several major reasons and these have increased over the years as the technology has progressed and developed.
